Mississippi One-Call
System, Inc. Data Distribution
We would like to announce that the
Mississippi One-Call System Inc. (MOCS) map data is now
available through MARIS (Who
is MARIS). The data will be
available to organizations that will be using the data in
house without intent to distribute or sell. Data
distribution will be based on a signed agreement. The
agreement can be downloaded from the MARIS web site at
http://www.maris.state.ms.us/HTM/DownloadData/MOCS.html.
The signed agreement should be returned to Mr. Steve Walker
at
swalker@ihl.state.ms.us or faxed to (601)
432-6893. Once an organization is approved to use
the MOCS data, it will be distributed through the MARIS web
or ftp sites.
Available Layers:
Airports
– Airport property boundaries
Places – City limits boundaries
Highways – County and city
highway centerlines
Institutions – Points of
Interest
Parks – Park property boundaries
Railroads – Railroad centerlines
Streets - County roads and city
street centerlines
Data Accuracy:
Highways, Institutions and Streets have
been collected using a combination of 1-meter aerial imagery
and 1 to 5 meter GPS units. All other layers are collected
using a combination of 1-meter aerial imagery and paper
maps.
Data Format:
The data will be
available for the entire state of Mississippi by county in
ESRI shape file format in WGS84 Lat/Long projection.
Metadata is contained within the attribute table for each
layer. Each county will be updated at least once yearly.
High growth counties will be updated twice yearly. Updates
will be sent to MARIS as they are completed.
Software Options:
The following are a list of
software options that have been evaluated and are
recommended by MOCS.
ArcView ($1,500.) can be used
to view, query, edit and build new data layers. ArcExplorer
(Free) can be used to view and query data only. ArcExplorer
can be downloaded from
http://www.esri.com/software/arcexplorer/index.html
. ArcPad ($500.) can be used with a GPS unit and a laptop
or CE device to view and collect GPS accurate field data
such as poles, manholes, utility lines etc. For more
information about these products, visit the ESRI web site at
http://www.esri.com.
AccuGlobe (Free) can be use to view,
query and edit data. AccuGlobe can be downloaded from
http://www.ddti.net/AccuGlobe/AccuGlobeSolutions/tabid/217/Default.aspx.
For more information about this product, visit the Digital
Data Technologies, Inc. web site at
http://www.ddti.net .
Feedback:
We would greatly appreciate any
feedback pertaining to the MOCS data and would like to have
a copy of any changes or corrections made to the data. This
will help us keep our data as up to date as possible. We
would also like to hear from any organizations that might be
collecting GPS point addresses. This is something our call
center could use to pin point an excavation site more
accurately. We know that some data is restricted such as
name and phone numbers, we only need the address number and
geometry for each address. Feedback, data or questions can
be sent to Amanda Russell at
gis@ms1call.org,
fax 601-981-9027 or phone 601-368-1150.
